About North Coast Courier
Originally founded in 1985 by Bruce and Rose Stephenson, the North Coast Courier has been a leader in local news on the North Coast of Kwazulu Natal from Umdloti to the Tugela River for the past 28 years. It is also the largest community newspaper in its area of distribution.
To start the North Coast Courier, Bruce who was already a seasoned journalist at the time, sold his prized MGB sports car and gave up the assurance of a monthly salary!
The North Coast Courier newspaper has kept the community informed and entertained ever since, living up to its fine reputation of trust and reliability.
The North Coast of Kwazulu Natal is undergoing significant economic growth with the development of the KZN Northern Growth Corridor that stretches from the N2 from Durban in the South through Richards Bay up to the border of Mozambique, covering the municipalities of Durban (eThekwini), Richards Bay (UThungulu), Ballito and Stanger (iLembe) and Mkuze (uMkhanyakude).
Areas of interest in the Corridor include : Cornubia, Dube TradePort, ILembe and Richards Bay.
The Cornubia multi-billion rand project, 15 km south of King Shaka International Airport, is the home of the next major industrial area and proposed to provide in the region of 24 000 homes of which 15 000 are proposed for subsidised housing. The balance of the houses will be made available for a wide range of income levels. The development, which will add value and new economic growth opportunities for all, takes place between the disadvantaged areas of Ottawa, Phoenix and Waterloo as well as the newer areas of Umhlanga and Mt Edgecombe.
The Dube Trade Port, 30 km north of Durban and located between the two biggest seaports in Southern Africa, is the only facility in Africa that brings together a state-of-the-art cargo terminal, an international airport and a 20-hectare development for flower and vegetable production.
A wealth of rich fertile soil and a good rainfall of more than 1 000mm a year, found in the iLembe District, about 65km North of Durban makes agriculture central to this area and the economy of Kwazulu Natal as a whole. Subtropical fruit and sugar-cane plantations abound along the coastal belt while farmers in the hinterland concentrate on vegetable-, dairy- and stock-farming. The areas of Eshowe and Vryheid are known for furniture manufacturing and forestry.
The centre of operations for the country’s aluminium industry is found at Richards Bay, while Richards Bay Minerals is home to the largest mineral-processing activities in the world. The Coal Terminal at Richards Bay is also the second-largest exporter of steam coal around the globe.
